The Glacier is Constantly New (2023)

THE GLACIER AND THE SKY ABOVE IT

Log line

THE GLACIER IS CONSTANTLY NEW is a short documentary film produced by Sjónhending for Thórbergsetur. It describes the magnificent nature of Breidamerkursand, but the uniqueness of the sand lies in the interaction between the glacier, the water, and the land in front of it, and we call it „The Grand Harmony“.

Synopsis

THE GLACIER IS CONSTANTLY NEW is a (17-minute) documentary film and the title refers to Thórbergur Thórdarson’s book, Steinarnir tala (The Stones Speak).

The landscape of Breidamerkursand – the glaciers, the mountain ranges, the glacial lakes – is simply magnificent to look at. But such strong survival can create a certain risk that people overlook other values, for example, the cultural value of the area and what we could call „landscape on a smaller scale“, that is all the landforms that have been created by the advance and retreat of the Breidamerkurjokull/glacier. These landforms, such as glacial fields, ridges, gravel channels and glaciers, testify to the dynamic geological processes that have played around this area and still do; the sand as a whole is a sort of living classroom of the landscaping unleashed by the melting of the glacier. The landforms hold together the history of this active landscaping; a story that can be read out of the country, if one knows how to look at it from the right perspective. Or in other words, there is much, much more hidden in Breidamerkursand than one might think at first, and another main focus of the film is to shed light on its richness and diversity. The main focus is then on the melting of the Breidamerkurjokull glacier caused by global climate change.

In the film THE GLACIER IS CONSTANTLY NEW, the focus is on changes due to climate change, and the lens is then directed to a land area that has long been known for its unique beauty and grandeur, but it features, among others, Jokulsarlón and Fjallsárlón. In this area, the effects of global climatic changes are very noticeable, but Jokulsarlón was e.g. barely existed almost a century ago.
