HOFFELLSJOKULL GLACIER is actually our vision and calls for a healthier nature. Our children and grandchildren will live in a hotter and more changing world, but our actions will determine how different it will be.

Synopsis

HOFFELLSJOKULL is a (43-minute) documentary film that describes its namesake, which nestles deep in Hornafjördur-fjord in Eastern Skaftafell County.

Nowhere on earth are glaciers as accessible for research as in Iceland. About 10 percent of the country is covered by glaciers, and roads lead to most of them. The largest glacier outside the Arctic region is Vatnao. From Vatnajokull there are approximately thirty glaciers. Hoffellsjokull is one of them, but at the foot of its glacier lagoons began to form in the 1940s.

Glacier research in Iceland is one of the oldest in the world. Hoffellsjokull has a long and unique history of research and has therefore for years provided both domestic and foreign scientists with great insight into the nature of the glaciers and their response to global warming. It can be said that Hoffellsjokull is the „true settler“ in the world of human glacier research; scientists who studied the glacier at the beginning of such research did a variety of pioneering work and developed methods on which modern glacier research is based and which are taught in universities around the world.
