Glacial Land – World of change (2016)

ICELAND’S GLACIERS ON A VANISHING HEMISPHERE

Log line

The retreat of glaciers is one of the most obvious signs of climate change.  Iceland´s largest glacier is the main focus of this film as we follow scientists examining ice caps, glaciers sands as well as the impact of global climate change on Earth´s glaciers, rising sea levels, and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Glaciers in Iceland are the most easily accessible in the world. Glacial research in Iceland by scientists and common people alike is amongst the oldest in the world.

Synopsis

GLACIAL LAND, -WORLD OF CHANGE is a (60-minute) documentary, where we join glacier groups of scientists and go on research expeditions with them. We have created and built trust and selected from among the scientists we want to work with: Helgi Bjornsson, Jón Ólafsson, Snaevarr Gudmundsson, Thorvardur Árnason, Skúli Skúlason, Thorsteinn Thorsteinsson, Kristín Svavarsdóttir, Thóra Ellen Thórhallsdóttir, Jón S. Ólafsson, Tómas Jóhannesson , Hronn Egilsdóttir, Rannveig Magnúsdóttir, Andri Gunnarsson, Snorri Baldursson, Gudni Elíasson and two foreign professors from NASA.

Helgi Bjornsson, a glaciologist is one of the film’s main interviewees and our main glacier consultant. The research we follow is the common denominator of all the basic sciences that modern glaciology spans.

The retreat of glaciers is one of the most obvious signs of climate change.  Europe´s largest glacier, situated in Iceland, is the main focus of this film as scientists examine the ice caps, glaciers sands as well as the impact of global climate change on earth glaciers, rising sea levels, and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Glaciers in Iceland are the most easily accessible in the world.   Glacial research in Iceland by scientists and common people alike is amongst the oldest in the world.

Amongst the locations visited is Jokulsarlón (The Glacial Lagoon) at the Southern end of Vatnajokull, Europe´s largest ice cap.  This majestic lagoon only started emerging about 85 years ago today becoming 27 km2 in size and the deepest lake in the country.  Dunes with small brooks and ponds appear with the retrieval of the glacier, with new ecosystems developing.  The “new” land gives scientists the amazing opportunity to investigate the life emerging in this seemingly harsh environment.

Iceland´s largest volcanic system lies under the thick ice cap of Vatnajokull carefully monitored by the scientists by flying over the glacier and by expeditions across it.
