Glacial Land – World of Change

Jöklaland

The retreat of glaciers is one of the most obvious signs of climate change.  Iceland´s largest glacier is the main focus of this film as we follow scientists examining ice caps, glaciers sands as well as the impact of global climate change on Earth´s glaciers, rising sea levels, and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Glaciers in Iceland are the most easily accessible in the world. Glacial research in Iceland by scientists and common people alike is amongst the oldest in the world.

THE GLACIER IS CONSTANTLY NEW

It is a short documentary produced by Sjónhending for the Þórbergur Center at Hali, Suðursveit. The film portrays the breathtaking nature of Breiðamerkursandur, highlighting its uniqueness found in the interplay between the glacier, the water, and the land in front of it—what we call „the great harmony.“

THE GREAT HARMONY OF THE SANDS

It is a documentary film that explores the dynamic nature of Breiðamerkursandur in East Skaftafellssýsla. It ignites awe and reverence for the majestic beauty of Vatnajökull, inspiring a deeper appreciation for this natural wonder and underscoring the importance of preserving such landscapes. The glacier itself is dynamic—“alive,“ in a sense.

JUST LIKA PAINTING BY EGGERT PÉTURSSON

A documentary about the painter Eggert Pétursson. In the glacial moraine in front of Skaftafellsjökull, on the outermost edges of the Tröllaskagi peninsula, and during our journey through the highlands, we uncover both the cornerstones and driving force of the film.

HOFFELLSJÖKULL GLACIER

It is, in essence, our vision and a call for a healthier environment. Our children and grandchildren will live in a warmer and changed world, but our actions today will determine how different that world will be.

GLACIAL LAND - THE WORLD OF CHANGE

It is a documentary that provides a brief overview of the research conducted by Icelandic scientists on the retreat and melting of glaciers, one of the clearest indicators of climate change and the global climate crisis.

JUST LIKE A PAINTING BY EGGERT PÉTURSSON

EINS OG MÁLVERK EFTIR EGGERT PÉTURSSON

Eggert is a conceptual artist with a realistic vision of form and structure, yet his fantasy is rooted in interpretation and personal emotion within the painting. In his sketchbook and in a musical ode to Mother Nature—where the resilience and diversity of the flora surpass the world of painting—lies the essence that underscores the existence of these two worlds.

"The sand, as a whole, serves as a kind of living classroom on the landforms shaped by the melting glacier. These formations collectively hold the story of this active landscape evolution over the past 120–130 years—a story that can be read from the land if one knows how to view it from the right perspective. In other words, there is far more to Breiðamerkursandur than meets the eye, and one of the film's main focuses is to shed light on its richness and diversity. Although Breiðamerkursandur, in its current form, is young, it is by no means a desert." Read more»
